Chapter 17

Jerry Maloney had admitted that he was capable of killing another human being. However, Tremayne had to acknowledge the link between his visit to Salisbury and Montfield’s murder was tenuous. Whereas it seemed plausible initially, Tremayne discounted it for now and decided to focus their efforts elsewhere.

Clare was to focus on Gloria Hardcastle, and he was to focus on Simon Potts, the dutiful husband of an unfaithful wife, which seemed too good to be true.

Also, more information was required on the research that Montfield and Sutherland had been working on and how it could be relevant twenty years later. Not technologically savvy, even Tremayne knew that it moved fast. As a beat policeman in his day, a two-way radio, but now smartphones. Even he, much as he had resisted, had learnt how to send rudimentary texts, and his sergeant loved the technology, the chance to buy online, to talk to friends around the world, to video conference with a police inspector close to where Jerry and Christine Maloney lived.

The inspector confirmed that the couple were popular and caused no trouble, and their modest hotel was financially viable even if it wasn’t full a lot of the time. And yes, the Scottish inspector had admitted, there were marriage difficulties, and the pair had separated for a few years. Apart from that, she had no more to say, and as to why they were in Salisbury, she had no idea.

Tremayne saw the Scottish inspector’s response as appropriate, but he had more knowledge of the man, in that Jerry had killed, been in places where others could have killed him, and that he had dealt out violence, received it in return.

‘Okay, Yarwood, none of this hiding in the office,’ Tremayne said. ‘Gloria Hardcastle, push the woman, get under her skin, do whatever.’

Clare took no offence at Tremayne’s quip, always appreciating them. ‘As long as you don’t want me to go with her on one of her night’s out.’

‘Not in your condition, but…’

‘Not for you or anyone else. I disapprove of her, and you know it.’

‘So does she. Anyway, get out there, push, cajole, squeeze. She’s holding back, so is Marjorie Potts and her husband, and for a motive, it’s something to do with what Montfield and Sutherland were working on, I’m sure of that.’

‘What if Montfield had something important?’

‘Such as?’

‘An innovative approach to weapon guidance systems.’

‘A long time ago, technology has moved on since then.’

‘Maybe it has, but Montfield had a notebook, and his mind was still active. He could have come up with something that people or governments would pay a lot of money for. Just an idea, thinking out loud,’ Clare said.

‘Not a bad idea, although I had someone look over the notebook, someone who should have found it if there was something of interest.’

‘Not if it was coded or too complex,’ Clare said.

‘Which means, if you’re right, that Montfield intended to do something with what was in the book, either to patent it or to sell it to the highest bidder.
